Development scenario in the state of Madhya Pradesh has witnessed many organizations working in the field of health, education, rehabilitation of development project affected communities, etc. in service delivery mode. However, none of them have emphasized and worked with an overarching objective of protection of rights of Dalit communities.

On this backdrop a group of young volunteers from Dewas district in the state decided to come together and form an organization, Jansahas Sosial Development Society, which focuses specifically on mobilization and empowerment of Dalit rights through its various interventions.

Jan Sahas was thus established in the year 2000 with an aim to work towards protecting rights of marginalized communities while specially focusing on mobilization and empowerment of Dalit community.

The organization is working in the rural and urban areas of Madhya Pradesh, primarily for Dalits, children and women. It is involved in the expansion of education, establishment of social justice, improving health conditions and social empowerment, adopting a spectrum of strategies including  workshops, meetings, seminars, trainings, awareness programs, community organization building, bal-panchayats, networking, information gathering, studies and advocacy.

The organization is operational in 13 urban locations of 2 District of Madhya Pradesh and 300 villages of 3 District of Madhya Pradesh. Through its networking and collaborative initiatives the organization has a presence in 19 districts of Madhya Pradesh and is involved in state level advocacy and lobbying initiatives.
