Manual Scavenging
Due to the caste system and the age old division of labour based on caste millions of individuals, especially women (96 to 98%), from Dalit and Muslim communities are still forced to take up the work of carrying human excreta on their heads.
This is not an occupation but an outright inhuman practice due to which social, economic, political and cultural exploitation of this community is taking place. Government of India banned this practice through legislation in 1993 all over the country but ineffective implementation of the same has resulted in this practice still taking place in many parts. Jan Sahas considers this issue critical for Dalit and Muslim community and is working for its eradication.
